How to care for cut flowers
Here’s how to ensure your fresh flowers last as long as possible:
Step 1: Start with a clean vase. How clean? You should be able to drink from it yourself.
Step 2: Recut the stems at an angle and add floral food (if provided) to your water.
Step 3: Keep away from heat sources & fruit - a sunny window or a hot room can deteriorate your flowers quickly. Aging fruit releases a gas that can cause the petals on some flowers to shatter (fall off the stem), so don’t leave your flowers next to your fruit basket.
Step 4: Remove old flowers as they expire - keep your bouquet looking fresh by removing spent flowers from the vase. Some flowers will age quicker than others. For example, cosmos and dahlias are short-lived flowers, while ranunculus and celosia will last about twice as long!
Step 5: Repeat steps 1 & 2. Keep your flowers in fresh water, and recut the stems when you change the water. Change the water anytime you see it looking dirty. Flowers will drink a lot of water in the summer months, keep an eye on the water level so it doesn’t dry up.
Some flowers are poisonous if ingested. Never consume any part of the flower or stem, and do not allow pets or children play with or consume your flowers.
